The substances you’re referring to are excipients, which help prevent the capsule material from clogging machines and reduce breakage during production. Nearly all supplement manufacturers use them for consistency and quality.
Our founder and chief formulator, Chris Kresser, has reviewed the research extensively, and the evidence supports the safety of silicon dioxide at the levels used in dietary supplements. For example:
The European Food Safety Authority (Aguilar et al., 2009) found no adverse effects from silicon compounds used in supplements.
A re-evaluation of silicon dioxide (Younes et al., 2018) concluded it does not raise significant safety concerns when used as a food additive.
Other studies (Jugdaohsingh et al., 2013; Koizumi) have shown no mutagenic activity and confirmed its safe bioavailability.
